Charles Martin Jones was born September 21, 1912 and died on February 22, 2002. Chuck was an animated filmmaker and cartoonist. Chuck is best known for having co-created Bugs Bunny and creating Claude Cat, Michigan J. Frog, Gossamer, Marvin the Martian, Pepé Le Pew, Wile E. Coyote, Road Runner and others as well. For me and amongst many others he was a part of Saturday morning cartoons and still makes me smile to this day.
I think many artists try to find what makes them smile in life. I’m not saying that no artist has ever been miserable but it is better when you are doing what you love and enjoying it rather than it being something you are just doing for the money. I’ve already had a rant about how money cannot bring you happiness and where happiness stems from. I find that my happiness is from taking pictures, from writing and from sharing with others my experiences. Not everyone attains fame or fortune and there are plenty infamous people that are happy. Many people think that fame would bring happiness when I think for many creates the opposite because it really depends on how or what made you attain fame. If it’s drawing than many have the preconceived notion that you always draw, always write, always take pictures and I think that’s why creative people try many things to not be pigeonholed into one thing.
This is something that makes a lot of sense to me and as an artist I know we’re highly self critical of how our art is. We’re not always spot on with our drawings, photographs, writing or whatever it is that we do we have to learn from the bad to get better. That is the way of learning is messing up, singing bad, drawing bad, writing bad and other things. Those things are our stepping stones to better things and improving on what we do. After all we are human.
There was always something very appealing about Bugs Bunny and perhaps it was his charisma or just his nature. Most likely and it’s just a guess when the artist creates a character he models them after themselves or at least a part of who they are so for Chuck and Bugs it is who he aspired to be and Daffy was more who he seen himself as. We all have the grumpy, can’t wake up in the morning and not before my coffee days. We all have times we’re uptight about something and even lose control. It is all part of what makes us unique and special.
